SOME HISTORY

To discover the history of the Valtiberina you do not have to read the history books. It is enough to make a tour around its villages, Anghiari, Badia Tedalda, Caprese Michelangelo, Monterchi, Pieve Santo Stefano, Sansepolcro and Sestino. The whole area is touched by the river Tiber and features traces from the populations and civilisations which have been present in this territory of Tuscany.
The present villages are located on the remains of the Etruscan and Roman settlements, in order to enhance the strategic functions of the crossroads between the north and the south of Italy. Both Etruscans and Romans built bridges and roads to exploit the geographical position which enhanced the trade and its political importance. The population grew as the trade flourished and the civilisation grew stronger and stronger. Today there is not much to see from the Etruscan and Roman period, but there are interesting examples from the Middle Ages. The strategic position of the Valtiberina was exploited during the whole Middle Ages and from this period you find castles, feuds and dioceses for both the religious and political control of the territory. The hermitages and the convents in the area show the religious importance in the Valtiberina during the Middle Ages, while Florence signed the civilisation from the 14th century. As a matter of fact, the Valtiberina features lots of artworks and architecture influenced by the stylistic Florentine language of the Renaissance. The Florentine masters, such as Piero della Francesca, Michelangeo Buonarroti and Alberto Alberti, all from the Valtiberina, got their art education in the
Florentine workshops and then embellished their home churches and villages with their art.
