SESTINO
Sestino was from the beginning a military settlement built
by the Romans to control the pass between Arezzo and Romagna, then
the Romans transformed it into a monumental town with temples, baths
and frescoed palaces.

|
There
is not much left from that period, but there are remains from the
Middle Ages which witness its vitality. The remains of the Benedictine
abbey built in the 12th century on the Sasso di Simone and the fortress
built by Cosimo de' Medici on the same top. Also visit the Pieve di
San Pancrazio, re-consecrated in 1259 which hosts a crucifix from
the Rimini school, and the Antiquarium Nazionale Sestinese, where
you find several Roman items. In the area of Sestino you find the
important Istituto di Studi e Ricerche della Civiltà Appenninica
and the marvellous landscape is protected by the Riserva del Sasso
di Simone and by the Parco Faunistico di Ranco Spinoso.
