SANSEPOLCRO

Of Roman orogins, Sansepolcro is a fascinating art city with Renaissance palaces and houses, in a beautiful natural landscape. It is famous for being the hometown of Piero della Francesca, but it is also the hometown of many other important artists in the 15th century. In the Museo Civico you find several works by Piero della Francesca, among which it is worth to mention the fresco of the Resurrection and the Polyptych of the Mercy.
The life and work of Piero della Francesca are the origins of the Palio della Balestra, celebrated every year in Piazza Torre di Berta, where the actors of the historical procession wear Renaissance costumes inspired by the works of the Maestro. The monumental palaces of Sansepolcro, from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, are all set along the Via XX Settembre which ends near the Porta Fiorentina, the main gate of the well-preserved boundary wall. Among the precious buildings you should stop at the Home of Piero della Francesca, which the artists probably built and where you today find Centre for the studying of Piero della francesca. Also visit the Duomo of Sansepolcro, rebuilt in the 14th century on the ruins of a another building from the 11th century and modified several times between the 12th and the 16th century. The façade was completely transformed between 1936 and 1945 and features the original forms of the façade. Inside the Duomo there are a wooden crucifix from the 12th century, known as the Volto Santo (the Holy Face), and a Crucifixion by Bartolomeo della Gatta. Also see the Chiesa di San Francesco, built in the 13th century in a Gothic style and embellished with a Franciscan cloister, and the Chiesa di Santa Chiara, recently restructured and now featuring an Auditorium. The Medicean fortress, rebuilt on the ruins of a building from the 14th century, is a nice example of military architecture from the 16th century. It can only be seen from the outside as it belongs to a private family.
