PIEVE SANTO STEFANO
Crossing the pass of Viamaggio at almost thousand metres
height, you find Pievo Santo Stefano, one of the oldest settlement
in the Valtiberina. Of Etruscan origins, the village became an important
wood centre during the Roman period and was even more important
under the Florentine domination. We do not know much about its history
because a flood in the 19th century destroyed artworks, documents
and archives.

The
most ancient religious building of Pieve Santo Stefano is the parish
church which gave the name to the village, built in the 12th century
and enlarged with the buildings of the Collegiata di Santo Stefano.
The whole complex was modified in the 19th century and is well-preserved.
Here you find an Assumption by Andrea della Robbia. Also take a look
at the Santuario della Madonna dei Lumi and, at the outsides of the
village, a very ancient pagan temple with an octagonal plant. In the
Town Hall you find a unique museum, dedicated to the diaries, with
autobiographic works from different part of Italy. Close to the Town
Hall you can admire the Loggette del Grano, built in the 18th century,
and in the neighbourhood you should see the Convento di Santa Maria
at Cerbaiolo and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo at Baldignano, with a crypt
from the 11th century. To end with you have the fortified village
of Mignano, a marvellous example of houses and a castle built around
the parish church.
