MUSEUMS

The Museo Civico di Sansepolcro holds some of the masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, such as the marvellous fresco "Resurrezione", the "San Ludovico di Tolosa" and the "San Giuliano". The Polyptych della Misericordia is exposed in a special room.
Apart from the works by Piero della Francesca you find works by many other famous artists: Santi di Tito, Giovanni Battista Mercati, Matteo di Giovanni, Andrea della Robbia, Luca Signorelli, il Pontormo. The museum also features a big gallery with works by the most known artists who were born or lived in Sansepolcro between 1920 and 1990. In the same building you find the museum dedicated to the treasures from the Cathedral, which hosts vestments and precious artworks. The building also features the archaeological findings from the surroundings of Sansepolcro.
At Anghiari you ought to visit the Museo di Palazzo Taglieschi which houses a vast collection of paintings , sculptures and tools among which we can mention the wooden Madonna by Jacopo della Quercia from the 15th century. The rounds in Robbiana style are also marvellous and are attributed to Benedetto di Santi Buglioni and the polychrome in terracotta representing the Nativity with the Saints attributed to Andrea della Robbia. In Anghiari, in the desecrated chapel Corpus Domini, you find the Museo della Misericordia. Here you find items from the activity of the Compagnia del Corpus Domini in the 14th century, such as beds for the ill people, scalpels and a precious archive with files which have been useful to document the work of the confraternity. The Palazzo del Marzocco hosts the Centro di documentazione della Battaglia di Anghiari. There are plastic figures, tin-soldiers and digital animation which offer the visitor the chance to get to know more about the battle which represent an important event in the local history. Here you can also admire the sketches made by Leonardo da Vinci for the famous painting of the battle, commissioned by the Gonfaloniere of Florence. The museum holds the reproductions of the codes by Leonardo known as the "Manoscritto K" and "Codice Atlantico".
At Monterchi, the Museo della Madonna del Parto preserves one of the most important frescoes by Pierodella Francesca, painted in the chapel of the graveyard. The Museum also disposes of open areas where literary and musical events are held during the summer. Monterchi also features the unique Museo delle Bilance, where you can see hundreds of Italian and foreign scales from the 15th and 20th century. The collection was carried out by Velio Ortolani from 1960. The Antiquarium Nazionale di Sestino is located in the centre of the village and features archaeological findings from the village. Here you find epigraphs of emperors and inhabitants of Sestino of Etruscan origins, cippus regarding the judges, emperors, divinities and memorial stones. The bas-relieves in stone are marvellous and represent gladiators and a "damnatio ad bestia". Very interesting is the collection of statues and ceramics.
The "Museo Michelangiolesco" was officially founded in 1964 in Caprese Michelangelo to commemorate the death of the artist 400 years before. Located in the home of Michelangelo (from the 14th century), in the Palazzo Clusini (from the 14th century), in the rooms of the Rocca and in the outside among the remains of the ancient castle, the museum preserves a big heritage of artworks. The ancient reproductions of the works by Michelangelo and the representation of the life of Michelangelo in 23 scenes, made by the most important Florentine painters from 1613 and 1620, are very interesting.
