MONTERCHI

Perched on an acropolis to which you reach by a torturous and steep road, Monterchi became famous thanks to the beautiful fresco of the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca. Painted in 1445 for a tabernacle of the graveyard of Monterchi, the fresco was forgotten until the 19th century when, in occasion of the 5th century of the death of the painter, it was taken down, restructured and placed in a special site by the municipality.
But the origins of Monterchi are much older. The village was actually an Etruscan-Roman settlement dedicated to the cult of Hercules and the boundary wall was raised during the Middle Ages which is still well preserved. Monterchi also became Florentine after the battle of Anghiari in 1441 and then incorporated in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The historical centre is picturesque with its medieval setting, where the stone-paved streets are lined by precious palaces such as the Palazzo Massi where you find the unique Museo delle Bilance e dei Pesi.
