CAPRESE MICHELANGELO

A picturesque village at the mountain with forests and springs, Caprese was the hometown of Michelangelo Buonarroti, son of the local podestà, who was born the 6th of March in 1474. Inside the house and at the Rocca you find the Museo Michelangiolesco, which feature several moulds and photo reproductions of the works of the genius of sculpture. A fascinating open-air museum with contemporary works and a monument dedicated to Michelangelo by Arnoldo Zocchi from the beginning of the 20th century.
Caprese Michelangelo was probably founded for military reasons in the 2nd century b.C. and still preserves the remains of the Castle from the Early Middle Ages built by the Longobards. Close to the village you can visit the religious monuments, such as the Chiesa di San Giovanni, where Michelangelo as baptised, the Chiesa di San Cristoforo fromthe 11th century, the Pieve di san Cassiano from the Early Christian period, the Abbazia di Tifi and the Santuario della Madonna della Selva, where you find a marvellous fresco of the Virgin Mary.
