ANGHIARI
Anghiari is an ancient medieval town which became Florentine
in 1440, after the famous battle when the Florentines defeated the
Visconti family. To celebrate the historical victory, the Florentine
Republic commissioned the Representation of the "Battle of
Anghiari) to Leonardo da Vinci. The love for art is still present
in Anghiari where there are many artisans and wood restructure workshops
located in the narrow streets.

Today
you can admire the marvellous medieval settlements and the Renaissance
palaces facing the streets and the squares in the historical centre.
Arriving to Anghiari, you first find the boundary wall and the Badia
Camaldolese, while the charm of the town lies in the small houses
located next to each other with flourishing balconies. A tour to discover
Anghiari departs from Piazza Baldaccio or Piazza del Mercatale, from
where you take one of the narrow streets to the main monuments. Visit
the Romanesque Badia from the 12th century with an octagonal plant,
which today features an exhibition area, the Pieve di Santo Stefano
from the 6th century and the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, where
you find a painting by Sogliani featuring the Last Supper and the
Madonna della Misericordia, and a big glazed terracotta work by the
Robbia school. In Piazza Mameli you find the Museo di Palazzo Taglieschi,
which holds a wooden polychrome Madonna by Jacopo della Quercia, a
terracotta work representing the Birth of Christ attributed to Andrea
della Robbia and a vast collection of popular artworks. You also should
visit the Palazzo Pretorio, with the theatre, built in the 17th century
in perfect harmony with the medieval buildings of the town.
