INTRODUCTION
The part of Tuscany where the river Tiber passes features
green landscapes with lots of history, plotted with artworks by
Piero della Francesca, the Florentine painter genius who chose the
marvellous nature of the Valtiberina as the background of many of
his masterpieces.

The
traces of time is clear in the Valtiberina due to the many villages,
which witness the religious art and architecture. The relationship
between man and nature in the Valtiberina has always been strong and
full of respect. The ancient populations and the ones today have modified
the landscape leaving traces , but have never damaged it. Churches,
monasteries, hermitages and convents still today express the spontaneous
and widespread religious spirit which has left traces of sober architecture
in the middle of the forests and valleys of the river Tiber. From
the Etruscans to the Renaissance the area has witnessed different
powerful civilisations, genius and artists, from Piero della Francesca
who was lived here, to Michelangelo who was born in this area and
the poet Dante, not forgetting Saint Francis who came here before
founding the Monastero della Verna and the religious order named after
him, the Franciscan order.
The strategic position of the Valtiberina is an important point
of departure to discover the marvellous area. Towards the Aretine
Apennines you find the Ponte di Burano which, according to some art-historians
was chosen by Leonardo da Vinci as the background for Mona Lisa. To
reach the slopes of the mountain Pratomagno, a territory with big
forests and plateaux you have to take the itinerary of Setteponti,
a never-ending itinerary of villages and churches among olive trees.
On the other side, Casentino features one of the most important forests
in Europe, signed by streams ending in the Arno river and by famous
monasteries such as Camaldoli and La Verna, which are still visited
by hundreds of pilgrims.
In the Valtiberina the tourist finds the perfect place to enjoy
the fascinating landscape, with lots of cultural events and possibility
to visit museums, art-works and religious monuments. You also have
the opportunity to practise sports thanks to the trekking trails,
horse tracks which allows the visitor to discover the characteristics
of the Valtiberina on the horse-back without hurrying. At lunch or
dinner you will find the lost flavours of the every-day dishes, typical
dishes prepared according to old recipes with local products, depending
on the season. You will never find the same dishes in all the restaurants
as every family has their own way of preparing the dishes.
