REGGELLO
In the area of Reggello there are many historical and artistic
monuments to be seen, starting with the square Piazza Potente with
the loggias from the 17th century and the elegant building which
today houses the Town Hall. There are many nice villas plotted in
the surroundings, such as the Villa Bonsi, from the 15th century
which was transformed into a villa-castle during the 19th century,
the Villa Medicea I Mandri, with its restructured façade
from the 17th century and the Villa Guicciardini at Pitiana, not
far from the church with the same name which today is a farm.

the majestic Torre del Castellano and the Castello di Sammezzano,
which got its actual face in the 19th century is decorated inside
with finishes in a Moresque style. As far as the religious architecture
is concerned you have to stop at the Abbey of Vallombrosa, the Chiesa
di SantAgata in Arfoli, wanted by Matilde di Canossa, and at
the churches of San Pietro in Cascia and Pitiana. In the Pieve di
San Piero in Cascia you find the Museo Masaccio di Arte Sacra which
was recently opened. It is the ideal place for the conservation and
exhibition of paintings, furniture, vestments, sculptures and gold-works
not only from the Church but also from other beautiful churches in
Reggello. Two rooms in the museum are dedicated to the Trittico di
San Giovenale, the first work by Masaccio of an inestimable historical
and artistic value, discovered only in 1961. It is worth to stop at
the Chiesa di Cancelli, built in the XII century and holds some nice
frescoes and at the Chiesa di San Clemente e Soriana, where there
are two sculpture masterpieces from the 15th century, two angel-shaped
candleholders by Mino da Fiesole and a bas-relief by Antonio Rossellino.
