PONTASSIEVE
It is the most important centre in the Valdisieve, where
most of the services and administrative activities are concentrated.
There are also many testimonies from the past in Pontassieve, in
particular in the historical centre where there are remains of a
fortified wall built by the Florentine Republic during the 14th
century, some palaces, the old town and a monumental bridge built
by the Medici family over the river Sieve in the 16th century.

| In
the neighbourhood you can visit the Castello del Trebbio, raised in
the 13th century by the Pazzi family and enlarged in the following
century, which features a precious fresco by Andrea del Castagno,
and the Castello di Torre a Decima, transformed into a residence by
the Pazzi family in the 14th century. Among the churches you should
visit the one of San Martino at Lobaco, a marvellous example of Romanesque
architecture built at the end of the X century and the Pieve di San
Giovanni Battista at Remole, built in the XII century which got back
its original façade in 1959 when the church was restructured.
Have a look at the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie al Sasso,
at the slopes of Monte Giove, built on the rock where the Madonna
appeared in front of three shepherds. Visit the small village of Santa
Brigida, in the thick green forest, where you have to stop at the
Romanesque church from which many trekking trails depart. In a panoramic
position you find the remains of the tower of the Castello di Montebonello,
while at Montefiesole there is a Romanesque church from the 10th century
at the foot of the hill. On the top of the hill you can see the remains
of a medieval fortress. It is also worth the while visiting the Villa
Martelli at Griciglian, an ancient fortification from the 15th century,
today transformed into a villa and the seat of a religious association.
At Pontassieve there are many possibilities to do trekking as there
are so many trails which are carried out by the Comunità Montana
(the Mountain Community) and several local excursion groups. Bike-riders
can run the panoramic roads of the hills over Pontassieve or entering
the forests with the mountain bike or why not run along the roads
that connect the different villages.
