PELAGO
Though belonging to the Valdisieve from a historic and administrative
point of view, Pelago is developed among the mountains which descend
towards the river Arno. In the town you find elegant palaces of
the local noble families, some of them embellished by beautiful
loggias. Take a look at the Chiesa di San Clemente from the 18th
century, where you find a small collection of Sacred Art.

| You
find many testimonies from the past plotted in the surrounding countryside.
Along the road which goes towards the Casentino, a little bit further
up from San Francesco, you find the Castello di Nipozzano, built before
year 1000 and surrounded by picturesque houses of the medieval castle.
The only remains of the Castello di Ristonchi is the high tower from
the XII century, while the Villa di Altomena, belonging to the Counts
Guidi, was restructured and today houses a farm. The Villa dei Buondelmonti
in Grassina was in the past property of the Vallombrosa Abbey, but
it was bought by the Florentine family Buondelmonti in 1586, which
was the leading family of the Florentine valleys. At Tosina you visit
the church and the monasterio di Santa Caterina, which features a
nice cloister, a Sala Capitolare, the refectory and the Library, while
the small hamlets of Paterno and Raggiali are worth a stop for the
characteristic picturesque stone-houses. During the middle of July
the picturesque centre of Pelago celebrates the On the Road Festival,
a big event with street artists which lasts for three days. Young
people from the whole Tuscany come here to see the concerts, theatre
plays, market and other events.
