Pescia is the capital of Valdinivole and features both important
medieval monuments and an intense productive activity, especially
in the floriculture.

Among
the most interesting monuments in Pescia you should see the Baroque
Duomo with the bell-tower from the 14th century and the Biblioteca
(Library) which features a nice small statue by the Robbia school.
Also have a look at he Oratorio di Sant'Antonio Abate, from the XII
century, restructured in the following centuries, and the Chiesa di
San Francesco, rebuilt in the 17th century to its original Gothic
style. Inside you can admire the altar-piece by Bonaventura Berlinghieri
which represents San Francesco and the stories of his life. On the
right side of the stream Pescia you find the long Mazzini square,
with the Palazzo dei Vicari from the 14th century and the Chiesa della
Madonna di Pie' di Piazza, with its façade in Brunelleschian
style. Walking the silent streets you reach piazza Santo Stefano where
you find the Museo Civico Carlo Magnani, housed in a nice palace from
the 18th century. The museum preserves tapestry, sculptures and paintings
from the Tuscan school between the 14th and the 16th century. Also
visit the Gipsoteca of the sculptor Libero Andreotti, in the Palazzo
della Podestà. Not far from Pescia, at Pietrabuona, you find
the original Museo della Carta, which shows the importance that the
paper industry had for the economy of Pescia before the boom of the
floriculture.
The children definitely do not want to miss an excursion to
the marvellous Parco di Pinocchio at Collodi, an
old village where Carlo Lorenzino, the author of the mythical book
of Pinocchio, grow up. In fact, Lorenzini chose the name of the village
as his pseudonym. When you get to the Park you first see the beautiful
Villa Garzoni, in Baroque style, built between 1633 and 1662, which
features an Italian garden, considered one of the nicest in Italy.
Then you get to the Osteria del Gambero Rosso, built by the architecture
Giovanni Michelucci. Collodi's description of the Osteria in the book
totally corresponds to the reality. The symbol of the park is the
statue of Pinocchio and the Fairy, made by Emilio Greco to illustrate
Pinocchio's transformation from a doll to a boy. The most interesting
part of the park for the children is of course the Paese dei Balocchi
(the Toy Land), with games which allows the children to enter the
story of Pinocchio, such as the whale stomach, the Labyrinth or the
Cave of the Pirates. To finish, the Park also features Laboratorio
delle Parole e delle Figure. Giovanni Michelucci invented this workshop
for illustrators and authors who illustrate and write child-books. |
