MONTECATINI TERME
Montecatini Terme does not need an introduction as it has
become so famous for the qualities of its spas and the sophisticated
atmosphere that you breathe along the streets with elegant shops
and boutiques, in the halls of the high-class hotels and in the
aristocratic gardens.

| The
interest for bodycare in Montecatini started in the 18th century on
the will of the Grand Duke Leopoldo I who wanted to restore the ancient
spas to exploit the thermal water. But Montecatini acquired its aspect
during the 19th century, when the town got its Neoclassical architecture.
The most important site in Montecatini is the Parco delle Terme, a
huge garden with the historical spas: the Excelsior, which mixes Liberty
buildings with modern crystal construction decorated with Murano glass,
the Terme Leopoldine and the Tettuccio, a symbol of the noble elegance
of the town, reconstructed in a Renaissance style in the beginning
of 1900. A pleasant excursion is the one to Montecatini Alto, which
you can reach with a cableway during the summer. The charming village
preserves the monuments of the Castle, contended between Florence
and Lucca during the 14th century and then dismantled by Cosimo I
at the middle of the 16th century. |
