| The
Tuscan Baroque has left traces in Monsummano. The town, in fact, developed
from the 17th century around the Santuario di Santa Maria da Fontenuova,
built to celebrate the miracle of pure water which bubbled up in a
marshy areas, which was until then unhealthy and full of malaria.
The Santuario houses an ivory crucifix attributed to Giambologna,
while there are fifteen lunettes of by Giovanni di San Giovanni which
represent the Miracles of the Madonna under the external loggias.
Do not miss the Osteria dei Pellegrini and the home of Giuseppe Giusti
which features papers and items from the poets life. A nice
excursion is the one to Monsummano Alto, a fascinating medieval settlement
with some houses, ruins of the castle, the walls and a charming Romanesque
church. From the top you have a marvellous view over Valdinivole. |
