CHIUSI
Passing San Casciano dei Bagni, the itinerary reaches Chiusi,
a real pearl in the south of Valdichiana, located on a hill of grey
tufa-stone surrounded by olive trees. In Chiusi you find all the
different periods from the Etruscan civilisation to the Romans,
from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and finally the period of
the Grand Duchy like in a never-ending history book.

The
Duomo of Chiusi was founded in the 6th century and modified in the
12th century, but today you find façade made at the end of
the 19th century. The Museo della Cattedrale next to the Duomo preserves
paintings, gold-works, liturgical items and a vast collection of paintings
and 21 precious miniature books from the 15th century from the Abbazia
di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. From the museum you descend to the suggestive
and interesting Labirinto di Porsenna, an underground track system
which crossing the city reaches a big cistern at the clock-tower of
the Duomo.
The most interesting site in Chiusi is the Museo Archeologico
Nazionale, opened in 1870 which features precious Etruscan findings,
Greek and Roman ceramics, funeral urns and polychrome sarcofaghues.
The museum organises guided visits to the Etruscan necropolis and
to the Early Christian catacombs in Chiusi. Nature-lovers can not
miss a trip to the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi, a memory of
the ancient marshes of the Valdichiana which were reclaimed in the
19th century. The lake of Montepulciano hosts the Lipu oasis, while
you can eat excellent grilled fish dishes in both the cities. The
gourmets will also appreciate the lake-fish in "tegamaccio",
or stewed fish, which is the speciality of Chiusi. In this area you
drink the Chianti dei Colli Senesi. |
