SAN MINIATO
San Miniato is a charming historical centre on the top of
three hills, originally in a strategic position in order to control
the road Via Francigena and the Pisa-Florence road.

| Have
a look at the chiesa di San Domenico, built in the 14th century, which
features precious artworks and faces the central square Piazza del
Popolo. Make a stop in Piazza della Repubblica, with the scenographic
concave prospect of the Seminario and the convex of the Palazzo Vescovile,
which connects this square to the nearby Piazza del Duomo. The Duomo
dates back to the XIII century and features a lovely Romanesque façade
embellished with 32 painted ceramic basins. The Museo Diocesano di
Arte Sacra is located in the Sacristy. Here you can admire paintings
and scultures from the 16th to the 19th century. Walking further up
from Piazza del Duomo, you reach the Rocca (fortress) with the Torre
di Federico (Fredrics Tower) from the 13th century. According
to the legend Piero della Vigna, the suicidal described by Dante in
the Divine Comedy, was hold prisoner and blinded here. The view, which
covers even Volterra, is marvellous. |
