HILLS >> VALDERA

INTRODUCTION

The biggest and most important businesses in Tuscany, flourishing industries and manufactures, heirs of the extraordinary local artisan tradition, are concentrated in Valdera.
The dynamism of the industrial production goes hand in hand with the agriculture. But this does not mean that this part of Tuscany does not have well preserved and fascinating centres. San Miniato Basso or pearls of Medieval and Renaissance art such as Volterra are only two examples. You find different industries in Valdera, from bricks to furniture, from wood to fabrics, but the main activity which characterises the area is without any doubt the leather tanning industry. Leather is first tanned here and then transformed into fashion accessories in the artisan workshops in Tuscany. Valdera is the headquarter for the Consorzio del Marchio Vero Cuoio. 70% of the domestic manufacturing of shoes and almost all tanned leather in Italy come from the leather factories in Valdera.
