>> VALDARNO
|
|
INTRODUCTION
The river Arno runs along a vast part of Tuscany, making
valleys with totally different characteristics.
|
|
The
Valdarno called inferiore (lower) is the valley created
by the river on its middle flow, signed by the Florentine domination
during the Middle Ages. Fortresses, villas and castles plot the hills,
while the valleys feature a more productive and commercial face.
In the Valdarno Inferiore you find in fact some of the main industrial
ad artisan districts in Tuscany, the leather centre in Fucecchio,
the china manufacturing in Montelupo, the hundreds of businesses in
Empoli which make clothes and glasses. The Valdarno Superiore is signed
by the harsh battles for the control of the area during the Middle
Ages between Florence and Arezzo. The main characteristics of this
upper part of the river Arno are the perched villages, the remains
of old fortresses, the cottages in the countryside and the churches
surrounded by green forests announcing the Pratomagno. Loro Ciuffenna,
Castelfranco di Sopra, San Giovanni and the other towns and villages
of the Valdarno Superiore preserve fascinating remains from the past
together with the interesting landscape. |
