POGGIO A CAIANO
Poggio a Caiano is a modern town which is definitely worth
a stop to see the beautiful Medicean Villa which dominates the city.
|
|
| The
Villa was a medieval fortress which was bought by Lorenzo il Magnifico
in order to convert it into a summer residence. The impressive stairway
was built in the 19th century. The hall of the Villa has a marvellous
barrel-vault decorated with golden caissons, while the walls host
frescoes dedicated to the Medici family. Not far from Poggio a Caiano
you find the Villa Medicea di Artimino, known as the Villa dai Cento
Camini (the Villa of Hundred Roads). It was designed by Buontalenti
for the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici and features the Museo
Archeologico Comunale in the cellar with Etruscan findings from the
surroundings of Poggio a Caiano. The Romanesque Church Pieve di San
Leonardo from the XI century near the Villa is worth a visit. |
