CHURCHES
In the Mugello there are many visible examples of religious
architecture such as churches, convents and sanctuaries. Plotted
over the whole territory, it is possible to make a sole specific
itinerary for these buildings. In Barberino di Mugello you can visit
the Pieve di SantAndrea a Camoggiano, characterised by a sober
façade and a loggia from 1470, in a Renaissance style.

Inside
you find a marvellous cloister enclosed by the loggias. At Scarperia
you ought to visit the Pieve di SantAgata which is the most
important religious building in the Mugello. It was built in the 12th
century on the remains of a Early Christian church from the IV or
the V century and features a rusticated ashlar wood façade
embellished with sandstone and green serpentine.
Located in a panoramic position, you find the Convento di Montesenario
which is an important convent built by the Florentine Dioceses in
the territory of Vaglia. The original church was built in 1241, while
the complex was enlarged by Cosimo I de Medici in the 16th century
and further on restructured in a Baroque style during the 18th century.
The bell-tower was raised in 1834 and inside the church there are
precious paintings from the 18th century.
At Borgo San Lorenzo you can visit the Pieve di San Lorenzo,
perched on a hill over the town. It was reconstructed in 1236 and
still features the hexagonal bell-tower with the extraordinary Madonna
attributed to Giotto. At Marradi it is worth to stop at the Badia
del Borgo, a monastery from the 11th century and restructured in a
Baroque style during the 18th century. Only the powerful bell-tower
preserves the Romanesque style and inside, in the sacristy, there
are paintings from the end of the 15th century by the masters of Marradi.
Next to the church you find the remains of the convent. At Palazzuolo
sul Senio you must visit the Santuario di Maria della Neve, raised
in Quadalto in 1459 as a small oratory. Enlarged in the 17th century,
the oratory still today preserves the same façade. On the main
altar you find the Botticellian-like Madonna, while in the choir closed
with forged iron you have two Baroque altars and a pipe-organ from
the 18th century. |
