A TOUR AROUND MUGELLO
PGoing from Florence towards the Mugello, the first municipality
that you reach is Vaglia which, in the hamlet called Pratolino,
features the Villa Demidoff, surrounded by a marvellous park. It
is worth the while to make a small deviation to the pleasant health
resort of Bivigliano, from where you can reach the convent-sanctuary
Montesenario.

PGoing
north you reach San Piero a Sieve which preserves in the
Pieve a beautiful font by della Robbia. On the top of the hill which
dominates the village you are able to visit the Fortezza di San
Martino, designed by Buontalenti. Not far from the village you can
visit the Castello del Trebbio and the Convento del Bosco ai Frati
where a beautiful crucifix by Donatello is preserved.
The municipality of Barberino di Mugello extends to
the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. In the centre of the
town you find the Palazzo Pretorio from the 15th century and the
Palazzo Medici. Just outside the town, on the top of a hill, lies
the Castello di San Piero, from the XII century. Near San Piero
a Sieve you should visit the Pieve di San Silvestro and, in the
village of Montecuccoli the Pieve di San Michele from the VII century.
Scarperia, famous for the working of stone and knife-making,
is located in the middle of a hill and mountain area. It was the
seat of one of the Vicariate in which the territory of the State
was divided into, and the centre surrounded by a boundary wall,
is quadrangular-shaped. Visit the Palazzo Pretorio, with a façade
full of armorial bearings and frescoes inside. And the Chiesa dei
Santi Jacopo e Filippo which preserves a Madonna with Child by Benedetto
da Maiano. Do not miss the nearby Pieve di Sant'Agata with features
marvellous paintings from the 14th century.
Borgo San Lorenzo is the biggest town in the Mugello, centre
of most of the commercial, tertiary and industrial activities. See
the Pieve di San Lorenzo, founded before the year 1000, and in the
resort of Luco the female Camaldolite monastery with the Chiesa
di San Pietro, transformed into a hospital in 1808 and until few
years ago it was the hospital of the Mugello. The Chini family has
its origins in Borgo San Lorenzo who produced one of the finest
china in Liberty style in Italy. The heirs of the family still manage
an important business. At Grezzano you find the Museo della Civiltà
Contadina.
Vicchio is located at the offshoots of the valley of the
Mugello, on a hill at the foot of the river Sieve. The historical
centre still preserves the curious hexagon-shape made by the Florentines
who also built the wall, which can partly still be seen. Beato Angelico
and Giotto were born here while Benvenuto Cellini often visited
the small town. In the homes of Cellini and Giotto you find museums
dedicated to the two masters.
Marradi, Firenzuola and Palazzuolo sul Senio form the so-called
Alto Mugello, on the Adriatic side of the Apennines, at the border
to the Provinces of Forlì, Ravenna and Bologna. Marradi was
conquered by the Florentines in 1428 and offers the visitor the
possibility to see the nice Chiesa di San Lorenzo, in a Neo-Classic
style and the monastery of Santa Reparata in Salto, founded in the
XI century. Visit the Teatro degli Animosi in the centre, which
was built in 1792, and the Museo Naturalistico.
At Palazzuolo sul Senio, at the resort of Quadalto, you visit
the sanctuary Santa Maria delle Neve from the 15th century, with
the female Franciscan sisters' convent next to it. In the centre
you find the Palazzo dei Caitani del Popolo, which today houses
the Museo della Civiltà Contadina e Artigina, and the Chiesa
di Sant'Antonio from the 17th century. The "ghetto" testifies
the big Jewish community at Palazzuolo.
Firenzuola is the capital of one of the biggest municipalities
in Italy. It was founded in 1332 by the Florentines who designed
the centre in a quadrangular shape and a boundary wall with four
towers, one at each angle and two gates. Only the towers and the
gates are preserved due to the bombardment from the WWII, while
the town has been completely rebuilt.
