THE LANDSCAPE
The landscape of the Mugello is very varied, going from inexpugnable
peaks covered with green forests in the Alto Mugello, to the rolling
hills which follow the flow of the river Sieve until the valleys.
In the middle of the chestnut, beech and oak forests you find marvellous
views, between the lower hills the landscape is plotted with churches,
old stone bridges and ancient fortresses.

| The
climate is quite harsh in the winter and the snowfalls are pretty
common, and more pleasant in the summer, thanks to the fresh mountain
winds which mitigate the heat. The relationship between man and nature
has always been solid and today the challenge is to develop the so-called
eco-tourism. The territory offers excellent accommodations and services,
which are organised and carried out in order to protect the environment.
An extraordinary way to visit the Mugello slowly is to take the train
along the old railway between Faenza and Florence. The Faentina railway
was inaugurated in 1893 to connect Emilia-Romagna with Tuscany, and
is a very charming itinerary which departs from the main railway-station
in Florence Santa Maria Novella and runs through the majestic landscape
to Faenza, stopping at every station in the Mugello. In all the towns
where the train stops the visitor is able to find trail itineraries
in order to discover the Mugello and its suggestive landscape. |
