MUSEUMS
The most typical of all the museums in the Mugello is the
one dedicated to the Museo della Manifattura Chini in Borgo San
Lorenzo: a vast collection of china, decorations, glass, and decorations
in Liberty style, made by the Chini factory, famous in the world
for its refined artisan products.

Some
of the rooms feature etchings, lithographs, oil-paintings and drawings
by Pietro Annifoni. Still in Borgo San Lorenzo, at the resort of Grezzano,
you can visit the Museo della Civiltà Contadina, a collection
of tools from the rural world with an important archive about the
Mugello. At Firenzuola you find the Museo del Paesaggio Storico dell'Apennino,
housed in the Vallombrosian Abbey from year 11th century. At Scaperia
you find of course the Museo dei Ferri Taglienti, dedicated to the
main local artisan activity: five sections in order to discover how
important the knife is for man, the knife producers in Italy, the
shapes and different parts of a knife, the knife-makers in Scarperia
and the traditional tools necessary for making a knife.
Still in the area of Scarperia, at Sant'Agata, you find the
Centre Sant'Agata Artigiana e Contadina di Leporino which features
the animated characters by Faliero Lepre, the environment and the
trades in the Mugello between 1920 and 1950. In the Cloister of the
Pieve di San'Agata there is a centre featuring the archaeological
findings from the pre-history and onwards. At Sant'Agata you find
the Raccolta di Arte Sacra, where you find a tabernacle by Bicci di
Lorenzo, altar-pieces by the Florentine school, a polychrome in terracotta
by Andrea della Robbia, paintings and vestments. The Museo della Pietra
Serena can be visited at Firenzuola: stone-items for everyday use,
art-works, descriptions of the extraction and the traditional working
of the stone.
Bruscoli, a small hamlet to Firenzuola, hosts a historical and ethnographical
exposition dedicated to the peasant culture, with lots of material
from the WWII. The Museo delle Genti di Montagna is located
in the Palazzo dei Capitani in Palazzuolo sul Senio and preserves
material of the local artisan and peasant culture. In the same building
you also find a permanent collection of pre-historic and proto-historic
findings. Vicchio offers the Museo di Arte Sacra e Religiosità
Popolare "Beato Angelico", a huge collection of paintings
and vestments from many churches of the Mugello. At Vicchio you also
find the homes of Benvenuto Cellini and Giotto, th etwo genius who
were born in the same village of the Mugello. The home of Cellini
is inside the boundary wall and probably dates back to the 14th century
as the wall. Today the building houses the tourist information and
disposes of a small exhibition room. In the future it is planned to
make it a centre for professional goldsmith courses.
Giotto, among the most important painters of all times, was
born in Vicchio and his home is today property of the municipality
housing a museum. The recently restructured premises feature a permanent
exhibition on Giotto, carried out by the Università Internazionale
dell'Arte, which comprehends coloured reproductions of the artist
and high-technology devices. In Borgo San Lorenzo you should make
a stop at the Villino Chino which was built by the head of the family
in 1923 with the money the family got from building the marvellous
spas of Salsamaggiore. The Villa shows the important role of the Chini
family regarding the china in the Italian Liberty style during the
first 20 years of the 20th century. The building, not far from the
ovens where the china was made, was decorated with china manufactured
by the family. Still today the Villa preserves beautiful pieces of
china, the floor and the decorations in the rooms, the fire-places. |
