IINTRODUCTION
Located between the basin of Florence and the peaks of the
Apennines, the Mugello has always been an important strategic hub,
connecting the south and the north of Italy.
|
|
Surrounded
by mountain passes which have trained the legs of many bike champions
and particularly beloved by motor-bikers, the Mugello has a century-long-lasting
connection with Florence which can be testified by all the Medicean
residences all over the area. The mountains covered with forests,
the green plateaux and the impetuous rivers make the Mugello the ideal
place for practising sport and enjoy the nature, while the ancient
fortress built to control the passes, the vast system of churches
and villas satisfy people interested in art and architecture. At the
foot of the Apennines there are rolling valleys with towns such as
Vaglia, San Piero a Sieve, Barberino di Mugello, Scarperia, Borgo
San Lorenzo and Vicchio. Further north, between the ridges of the
Mugello and the passes which descend towards Bologna and Romagna you
find the mountain resorts Firenzuola, Palazzuolo sul Senio and Marradi.
Considered until some decades ago a "depressed" area
for the lack of industries, the Mugello today can show an intact eco-system,
which offers extraordinary possibilities for eco-tourism and a vast
range of occasions to practise sport. From the Autodromo Internazionale
del Mugello, where races valid for the world championship are held,
to the lake Lago di Bilancino, from a unique paths to mountain passes
which represent a challenge for even trained bikers, the tourist find
lots of occasions to move around. Then there are museums, the churches
and the collection of sacred art, the majestic Medicean villas in
the countryside, an excellent gastronomy which is a the meeting of
Florentine and the Bolognese kitchens. In the Mugello you find everything
for a relaxing holiday. |
