PODENZANA

Podenzana dominates the valley which goes along the right side of the river Magra with the powerful castle of the Malaspina family, from the 16th century and restructured in the 60’s. Thanks to its strategic position, the castle was contended for a long time, until the Malaspina family took it back in the 16th century. At Podenzana you find one of the most important sanctuary in Lunigiana, where pilgrims came during the Middle Ages and which is linked to a legend. It is said that the Madonna appeared on a chestnut-tree which is still preserved at the back of the altar. Close to Podenzana you have Montedivalli which is a Ligurian island in the Tuscan region and preserves the Pieve di Sant’Andrea, a pearl of Romanesque art.
