LUNI e SARZANA
The archaeological settlements of Luna and Sarzana are two
sites which you can not miss if you want to get to know the past
of Lunigiana. Luni was founded next to the sea117 a.C. as a harbour
for the shipping of marble extracted at the Apuane Alps. After centuries
of flourishing activities and welfare, Luni was abandoned in the
12th century due to malaria, the sand-invasion of the harbour and
the frequent wars in the area. Among the remains from the Roman
period you can see the forum, the frescoed houses and a big amphitheatre.
Continuing the road of Aurelia, not far from Luni you get to Sarzana,
today a flourishing commercial town and in the past a strategic
check-point for the domination of the valley Valle del Magra.

Sarzana
gradually took the place of Luni, after the abandoning, and is worth
a visit thanks to the marvellous remains. The streets of the historical
centre are lined with palaces. An interesting building is the Cittadella,
an imposing fortress erected by Lorenzo il Magnifico in the 15th century.
Sarzana is famous for its handicraft and the workshops. Every year
in August, the inhabitants celebrates the Mostra Nazionale dell'Antiquariato
and the Soffitta nella Strada, a antique furniture festival where
you can find whatever you are looking for, unique items from the whole
world.
