LICCIANA NARDI
The second name of the village remembers the local hero from
the middle of the 19th century, Anacrusi Nardi, to whom a square
is dedicated, in the beginning of the village where you better park
your car. There is of course a Malaspina castle and a parish church,
surrounded by workshops and picturesque houses. Walk up to the Torre
del Nocciolo, or Prada di Cisigliana, taking the street where the
Castello di Bastia is situated. On the top of the hill you can admire
the marvellous view over the Apennines and the Apuane Alps. Not
far from Licciana you find the ruins of the bell-tower of the Convento
dei Servi di Maria, closed by Napoleon. The path that you have to
take to get here is very bice.

The
surroundings of Licciana offers villages, castles and amazing landscapes.
If you take the road from Licciana towards Lagastrello, you get to
Varano, the capital of the Este government until the French
revolution. Continuing you reach Tavernelle, which features
old stone houses and workshops with their original inscriptions. Do
not forget to stop at Taponecco, Apella and Linari
where you find the remains of an ancient abbey. Also visit the village
of Monti, where you find the remains of the castle built in
the 12th century and the Pieve di Venelia from the 11th century.
