FOSDINOVO

The castle of Fosdinovo is the most photographed castle in Lunigiana, perched on a hill from which it dominates the whole wonderful landscape. Solid and imposing, the castle was raised in the 14th century, fortified during the following century and modified in the 16th century according to the elegant Renaissance style. The cylinder-shaped towers and the walls make the Castello di Fosdinovo a pearl of the medieval architecture, so interesting that all the important houses wanted it for its strategic position, though it manly belonged to the Malaspina family, and today is a private property.
The castle houses workshops, concerts and other cultural events and can easily be visited. Just contact the owner. The tradition tells that Dante came here to visit the Malaspina family and that a ghost wonder around in the dark rooms. According to the legend the ghost is a young girl who was killed due to an impossible love-story. The furnishing is in many cases original which makes the castle even more interesting and worth a visit.
