FIVIZZANO
Called the Florence of Lunigiana, Fivizzano was nominated
"the noble city" by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1846.
Thought the town was damaged by earthquakes and bombings during
WWII, it still preserves a nice historical centre. It is very pleasant
to visit the palaces in the centre, such as the Palazzo Molari and
the Palazzo Malaspina, close to the parish church, the Palazzo Borni.
Also have a look at the architecture of the Accademia degli Imperfetti,
a literary institution from the 16th century which is still an active
centre.

The
Palaces Benedetti Chigi and Fantoni Bodoni have been restructured
and house a permanent exhibition of books from the 15th century, to
celebrate the fact that Jacopo da Fivizzano here carried out one of
the first writing offices in Italy. The first writing-machine was
invented in the Palazzo Fantoni in the 19th century. Also visit the
Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista and the former Augustian convent and
have a walk along the boundary wall, the most evolved defensive structure
in Lunigiana, commissioned by Cosimo de Medici in 1540. To end with,
the Piazza Medicea is very scenographic, with a marvellous fountain
placed by Cosimo III in 1683.
