HILLS >> LUNIGIANA

CASTLES

The most original and fascinating characteristics of Lunigiana are the castles. Built mostly by the Malaspina family, the castles dominate the valleys and the villages, welcoming the tourists instead of stopping the foreign armies and feature a century-long history. Some of the castles still have their furnishing intact, while others are museums, or have been abandoned. The castles are the symbol of Lunigiana, and preserve all the events of the history as all territories close to a border or a crossroad do. The most fascinating castles which you have to see are the Fortezza della Brunella at Aulla, the Castello di Bastia and the Castello di Castiglione delle Terziere.
Every village of Lunigiana has its own castle, which represents the original centre of the modern villages. Fivizzano, Fosdinovo, Villafranca, Mulazzo, Licciana Nardi, Pontremoli and Tresana hold the best preserved and most fascinating castles in the area. Some of them belongs to private families and can be visited upon request.
