BAGNONE
Located in the middle of a marvellous leech and pine forest,
Bagnone is perched on a rock spur over the river of Magra. The dominating
position and the medieval architecture make it an interesting site
for tourists in Lunigiana, who here find artisan workshops, markets,
inns and charming accommodations. The river next to the village
has favoured the building of water mills, some of them still in
use for the grinding of products from the forest. The Castello di
Bagnone, headquarter during the Florentine domination of the Val
di Magra in the 15th century, has been restructured and can be visited
upon request.

From
the outside you can see the powerful watch-tower with a rectangular
base and you are able to enjoy the marvellous Early Medieval architecture
with the Apennine peaks in the background.
The round tower was raised by the Malaspina family who transformed
the original fortress into a palace, enhancing the settlement of artisans
and middle-class families in the tower-houses in the neighbouring
village. The owner of the castle who also restructured it, is the
writer Jacopo Bodoni. He has carried out an important Centro di Studi
Umanistici, archive and library in the castle. Apart from housing
a unique collection of the history of Tuscany and Lunigiana, the castle
also hosts congresses, conferences, music festivals, cultural events,
theatre school and some associations busy in saving the architectonic
heritage in Lunigiana. From Bagnone you also reach the Castello di
Treschietto, which ruins are perched on the ridge of the mountain
Monte Orsaro.
