HILLS >> GARFAGNANA

SOME HISTORY

The first population to live in the Garfagnana was probably the Apuane Ligurians, fierce warriors who managed to resist against the Roman legions for over hundred years after the fall of their main centre.
From year 1000 there were terrible battles between Pisa, Lucca, Genoa and Florence as the cities contended the domination of Versilia and its inland. The Garfagnana preserves about ten beautiful Romanesque churches from this period. After the definitive supremacy of Florence, peace was settled by Lorenzo il Magnifico who was then the leader of the Medicean family. In the 16th century the Garfagnana was governed by another important person, Ludovico Ariosto, who was sent to Castelnuovo as a governor.
