INTRODUCTION
It is the green heart of Tuscany, entirely covered by uncontaminated
forests, rich in rivers and streams and plotted with nice small
towns. The Garfagnana features one of the most extraordinary natural
treasures, and its inhabitants have shown to be aware of their responsibility,
carrying out a vast system of protected parks.

More
than 60% of the Garfagnana is covered with green forests, mostly chestnut
forests. Man thus take care of the forests, which has always been
the main sustenance, and therefore he can not afford to destroy them.
The main activities of locals have traditionally been the fruit collection
and the working of wood, but without exhausting the resources, on
the contrary, always protecting them.
The microclimate of the Garfagnana has favoured the rich flora,
thanks to the barrage of the Apennines which stops the cold winds
and favour frequent rains. The Parco delle Alpi Apuane and the one
of Orecchiella, the natural reserves of Lamarossa, Orecchiella and
Pania di Corfino have more than 300 km of paths for walking, horse-back
riding or biking in order to get to know the extraordinary natural
resources of the Garfagnana. The peaks of Giovo, Rondinaio and Prato
are a challenge for experienced climbers. The canyon of the Orrido
di Botri, where the eagle still build nest, the impetuous streams
and the rolling hills of the Orecchiella attract more and more tourists.
In order to be able to appreciate better these beautiful sites,
the inhabitants of the Garfagnana have built accommodations in harmony
with the landscape and set up a vast range of services for tourists.
From studies of the local flora and fauna to summer camps for children,
who here have the possibility to see wolves and royal eagles in their
own habitat. The tourist who visit the Garfagnana has as a reference
point the river Serchio, which is the third river in Tuscany and has
traces from ancient settlements. To the extraordinary natural heritage
of the Garfagnana, we can add the historic and archaeological heritage
which gives the tourists many opportunities of leisure.
An Itinerary along churches, towns, fortresses and monasteries
can be traced from the remains of the Apuane Ligurians, to the Roman
period, and further on to the battles between Lucca and the House
of Este for the control of the territory. The Museo Etnografico di
San Pellegrino in Alpe, located in the house of refuge on the Pilgrim
road to Roma, houses all the documentation of the local history. The
Valle del Serchio, due to its isolation for hundreds of years, have
kept its traditions, customs and festivals intact where elsewhere
it have been forgotten. In the villages along the river the inhabitants
celebrate suggestive events according to the season and the religious
festivities. Do not forget to taste the typical products of the Garfagnana.
