POMARANCE
Going down from Volterra towards Massa Marittima, the first
resort that you reach is Pomarance, a modern small town known for
its big geothermic central.
|
|
| The
old part of the centre of Pomarance is located around the parish church
which houses some precious paintings by local artists. Towards the
south along the Valle del Diavolo you get to Larderello, which name
comes from the French chemist Larderel who here, in the 19th century,
started the boric-acid production on industrial scale by using the
extraordinary resource of the underground. The exploit of the boric
fumaroles started with the opening of the first geothermic central
in 1918. Today the Italian Electric Company, Enel, continues the activity
by exploiting the energy from the boric fumaroles. The history of
the geothermic activity in Larderello can be seen in the Museo della
Geotermia. On request, you can assist at the opening of a fumarole
which is more than 700 metre deep and from which the steam comes out
with a powerful noise. |
