TAVARNELLE VAL DI PESA
Tavarnelle di Val di Pesa is a town that lies along the road
Via Cassia, and is actually the fusion of numerous small towns plotted
along the ancient Roman via regia. In the centre of
the town you should visit the Chiesa di Santa Lucia al Borghetto,
built in the XIII century and is one of the finest of gothic architecture
in the area. Inside you can see parts of a cycle of frescoes from
the second half of the 14th century.

| San
Donato in Poggio, a hamlet of Tavarnelle, still features the Medieval
walls with the two original gates. At San Donato you find the parish
church with the same name, a model of Florentine Romanesque style
from the 12th century, and the Palazzo Pretorio. North of the town,
above Sambuca, you have to stop at the Badia Vallombrosana di Passignano,
founded in 1049 by San Giovanni Gualberto. The enormous monastery
complex which was fortified in the 15th century is situated in a very
picturesque location and in the chapel of San Michele Arcangelo you
may admire the frescoes by Domenico Cresti, called Passignano. In
the monastery you can visit the refectory, with a Last Supper painted
by Davide and Domenico Ghirlandaio, the old kitchen and the chapter
hall. Going back towards the centre of Tavarnelle , at Morrocco, you
find the church and the Carmelite Santa Maria Convent, and, not far,
the Museo Vicariale housed in the vicarage of the ancient Church of
San Pietro. The museum hosts masterpieces of paintings and sculpture,
gold-works, hangings and other items from the surrounding churches.
