SAN GODENZO
Built around an important Benedictine abbey which was founded
in the 11th century in honour of San Gaudenzio, the village is located
among chestnut and beech forests. See the Abbey and the small village
of Castagno dAndrea, at the slopes of the mountain Falterona.
At Castagno dAndrea you can visit the nice Chiesa di San Martino,
which features the precious works of Pietro Annigoni, and one of
the Visitor Centres dedicated to the Monte Falterona where you find
the Arno spring.

| Along
the river Arno, at the slopes of the Casentine mountains, you find
many villages which are worth a stop, such as Capolona with
the beautiful Pieve a Sietina, a Romanesque church embellished with
frescoes of the Arezzo school in the 15th century. Dominated by the
medieval castle, Subbiano slies on the left bank of Arno. Two
kilometres from the centre of the village you find the massive structure
of Castelnuovo which dominates the road with its tower from the 15th
century. At the borders to the Pratomagno mountains you find the Castel
Focognano, famous for the Pieve di SantAntonio a Socana,
a unique example of Romanesque architecture with a hexagonal tower,
built on a holy Etruscan area. Still around Pratomagno you find the
small village of Talla, in the chestnut forest. Pratomagno
and the villages around are famous as summer resorts and the mountain
around Talla features a the Castello di Bagnina which preserves big
parts of its original architecture. Along the road towards the Santuario
de La Verna, you pass Chitignano, once a famous spa which today
preserves the interesting Castello degli Ubertini and the Casa del
Podestà. |
