CHIUSI DELLA VERNA
On the top of a hill over the marvellous Casentine forest,
you find the Santuario de La Verna a worldwide famous religious
site where St Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. In 1215 St
Francis and a few monks built the first cells, founding what was
soon to be a big monastery, a destination for pilgrims.

Though
the monastery is an imposing building, it still preserves its sober
architecture. You can visit the small Chiesa di Santa Maria degli
Angeli, built in 1216 and further on modified, the Cappella delle
Stimmate, th eMuseo del Santuario, the Cappelle di San Francesco,
San Bonaventura and SantAntonio da Padova, the Basilica and
the Convent. There are several glazed terracotta paintings by Andrea
della Robbia which represent a particularly precious and important
collection from the Renaissance Florentine workshop. A short excursion
to the Monte Penna offers an extraordinary view over the valleys of
Arno and Tevere.
