BIBBIENA

Bibbiena, a charming hill town, is located along the slopes of Arno and is the most important commercial, industrial and administrative centre in the modern Casentino. Originally an Etruscan settlement, it became a feud of the Bishops of Arezzo and preserves nice palaces in the historical centre. Among the palaces you find the Palazzo Dovizi, the home of the author of Calandria, Bernardo Dovizi, called “the Bibbiena”.
The Renaissance building was built in the 16th century. A beautiful building is the Chiesa di San Lorenzo from the 15th century, where you find two masterpieces by Andrea della Robbia and a nice oratory. The Chiesa di Sant’Ippolito also dates back to the 15th century, which dominates Bibbiena from the top of the hill where the ancient fortress was located. The church features some precious painting from the Renaissance. In the neighbourhood you ought to visit the Santuario di Santa Maria del Sasso. The legend tells that the Madonna in 1347 appeared here in front of a young man just where the rock is located behind the main altar. The icon of the Madonna del Sasso is preserved inside and is attributed to Neri di Bicci. In the area of Bibbiena you also find Serravalle, a picturesque village located around an ancient castle. It is connected with Camaldoli by a secondary road which runs through a nice landscape. Along the road which connects Bibbiena with Poppi you might want to stop at the small village of Ortignano Raggiolo, situated in a marvellous chestnut forest with mule-tracks perfect for a walk. The village is famous for the high quality of the mushrooms and the chestnuts which can be collected in the forest.
