INTRODUCTION
An extraordinary forest and marvellous spiritual sites which
represent the whole Christianity are the main characteristics of
the Casentino. Her you also find the spring of the river Arno at
the slopes of the mountain Falterona which then flows along the
vast plateaux close to Arezzo. The monasteries of Camaldoli and
De La Verna survey the Valli dell'Arno and Tevere which flow parallelly
for a short track.

The
area of the Casentino thus offers the visitor an uncontaminated and
protected nature thanks to the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi,
which is plotted with buildings and villages. The location of the
Casentino, in the north-east part of Tuscany, made it a contended
area during the wars between Florence and Arezzo. From this period
there are still many fascinating medieval fortresses in the wild landscape.
The area features some of the most important and most beautiful sanctuaries
in Europe which are still the destination for many pilgrims and tourists.
The human presence in the Casentino goes back to ancient times,
a presence which has not damaged the nature. On the contrary, man
has always tried to protect the masterpieces of the nature, building
settlements, defensive systems and spiritual sites in harmony with
the landscape. The noble family Guidi in Poppi, who for a long period
governed the Casentino, built castles around the farmed land. The
fortifications of Romena, Porciano, Castelleone, Castel San Niccolò,
Borgo alla Collina and many others are the witnesses of the past.
The Tarlati and Ubertini families dominated the area around Bibbiena
and also left traces, while the area close to Poppi, Campaldino witnessed
the final battle between Guelphs and Ghibellines in 1289.
The beauty of the forests was the reason why the monks and other religious
people chose this area in order to find the right spirituality.
LAt Verna St Francis received the stigmata and San Romualdo
founded the hermitage of Camadoli. Dante was one of the Guelphs who
fought at Campaldino and then passed his worst years here in exile.
The area of the Casentino became famous as the Poet mentioned it several
times in his Divine Comedy. Today the Casentino offers beautiful natural
sites and a historical heritage which have been protected and enhanced.
The Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi has settled a list of accommodations
which fulfil the ecological obligations in order to improve the services
for the visitors, especially regarding the environment. The businesses
and accommodations with the logo of the Park promise to save energy
and water, use the resources in a rational way, reduce the use of
plastics and paper, promote the local cuisine and to enhance an environmental-friendly
attitude among the visitors. The visitor who choose one of the accommodations
with the logo also choose to respect the nature and culture of these
areas and will live a unique experience. |
